I'm a Wellington-based /AotearoaNew Zealand photographer, poet and art writer with a long career of exhibiting and publishing photobooks.
My work is in the public collections of Te Papa, the Sarjeant Gallery, the City Art Collection, the Arts House Trust, the Dowse Art Museum, the Waikato Museum, the Dunedin Public Art Gallery and MFAT.
My projects include that explore ideas about place and how culture and society are constructed. My last book Of the hill examines the power of lWellington's major hills, particularly Te Ahu Mairangi. The Long View, published to accompany an exhibition at Pah Homestead, looks to get inside the feeling of Auckland's CBD, one of the sources of New Zealand's wealth and power, as it reinvents itself for the 21st Century.
Bent, a project begun in 2011, reflects on the way we use trees in New Zealand - from the swathes of native forest cleared for agriculture by settlers or today's farming of Radiata Pine.
Old New World, (Lopdell House Gallery, 2012), looks at changes in New Zealand society as seen in small towns throughout the country. The work was also a nationally toured show and excerpts were published in Tahake magazine (no 77) and Booknotes (no 176). Old New World includes an interview with Gregory O'Brien about the ideas behind the work.
Series such as 17 Days of Shopping and Plant Life have been published in Sport and Landfall magazines, respectively.
Constructed images
In earlier series such Fabrication, White Thread, Partial View and At Sea I worked with staged images to dramatize ideas. Sarjeant Gallery curator Greg Donson has written an essay about this strand of my work. My most recent work, Medical Daydreams, which features my iPhone photographs, returns to the lyrical, poetic side of my work.
